I do not think that it is cruel in any way to put animals in zoos if and only if the animal was 1. injured but brought into a zoo to take care of it then release it back into the wild 2. the animal was born in captivity and is thus unable to survive on its own in the wild 3. the animal's parents were killed when it was young, therefore having no one to look after it 4. the animal's parents deserted the animal or 5. the animal was brought back to study it without means of dissection, in order to better preserve its species' survival.

The animal must of course be kept in an enclosure that is not too small or too crowded. An open enclosure such as the ones in our very own Singapore Zoological Garden would be best

Qi Wei's

I think that keeping animals in zoos are not cruel. Unless they are in a zoo that cadged them in small cramped premises or metal cages. Keeping animals in zoos also increases the rate of survival of them then in the wild.Although it's not nice to have lots of people staring at you while you eat and...etc. Preferably, i think that animals kept in a protected reserve would be much better as they have a huge place to move freely, lots to eat and a place that looks like their natural habitat. They can be protected from poachers, hunters and predators. In this way, the population of the animals, endangered or not, would increase and the number of animal deaths will decrease. Zoos are meant to ensure that the animals are not harmed in any way and to prevent animals from getting extinct.

Yes

Yes, I think it is cruel.
Keeping the animals in the zoo will make the animals in there get uncomfortable which is quite cruel.
If a person keep u in a cage, would u call them cruel?
From BingYou

Should we be cruel to animals?

No,we should not.Animals give us food, wool and companionship.Besides, some animals even help keep Singapore safe, like some dogs, that help sniff out clues to nab criminals.Anyway, don't we get milk from cows or goats? So,why be cruel to animals? NOAH

cruel? ZOO?

Nah. I don't think keeping animals in zoos is cruel. Because, if the animals aren't kept in zoos, maybe they will be eaten or caught by predators. Then, this will lead to the death of the animals. But keeping Big animals in zoos can also endanger them by not letting them to move easily & being cram in a cage. This is not a good idea either. So, I suggest that to keep Young or Smaller animals in zoos & letting the Bigger or Older ones out not in a kind of small zoos, instead, in a big & roomy kind of zoo to allow them to move freely, easily & more comfortably.

Keeping animals in the zoo...

Aaron Koh: - I think it is good that the animals are being kept in the zoo. They are being well-fed by the zoo-keeper and do not need to worry about their food. They are also well-protected in the zoo to prevent them from being killed by their predator. And most importantly, when they are sick, the zoo has vets to take care of them and care their illness. ;)

Elyn :

i think it is cruel to put animals in zoos as it will endanger some species of animals.
animals also don't have freedom to move about. the environment is different from its natural habitat. so, some animals are not used to the environment and will eventually die as they cannot move away from the zoo.
s0 , i think it is cruel.

Keeping animals in zoo...

Junwei : I do not think that keeping animals in zoo is cruel only if the zookeepers treated them badly. In the zoo they are protected from poaches and extinction and they are provided with foods. When the animals are sick, there are vets to attend and look after them.

Z.O.O.

Long Jiun:I don't think it is cruel to keep animals in the zoo because they are protected well in the zoo and do not get harmed by tourists or people touring around the zoo unless they harm them in a bad way. They have metal bars preventing people from climbing in and dangering the animals when they are in their enclosures. They also can make friends with other same species of animals when they are kept together, preventing them from being lonely.

I think it is okay for zoos to keep animals as it helps the prey to extend their life span as there will not be any predators to harm them. The other bright side is that zoos will breed the endangered species and prevent unwanted extinction. On the other hand, the animals will be too pampered and when they are released into the wild, they could not survive on their own as they were too dependant on their zookeepers. My last point is that animals should be left in the wild as I would be very sad to be isolated from the rest of my species and being kept in a cage for people to view.I would suggest that these zoos should make the cages more "animal-friendly" and put more animals into each cage instead of just putting one miserable animal in each cage.

Not cruel ^^

nicole: I don't think it's cruel to keep animals in zoos, because if you were one of those animals that are weak, you would of course prefer to stay in a cage rather than being "visible" to your predators. Being in zoos are also a good thing as they provide the animals with food which means you don't need to hunt at all, free-of-charge!=D So i think it's okay since the animals are treated rather well...=D

My feelings...

I feel that it is not cruel to keep animals in zoos because the animals are well- cared for in the enclosures. They are fed healthily in the zoos whereas those in the wild may have to suffer when there is a famine in their habitat. Enclosures also provide a similar habitat to their natural habitat. So, the animals will be able to blend in easily. After all, the animals are given freedom during animal shows. So, it is not cruel to keep them in zoos!

LIK WEE:
I think that keeping animals in the zoo is cruel to them as the zoo is not their natural habitat.I think that if you were one of the animals in the zoo, would you like to be kept in captivity and lose your freedom?Your answer would obviously be no.
I feel that those animals live in an "inactive lifestyle" as they are fed by the zookeepers during mealtimes instead of being like the animals in the wild when they roam around looking or hunting for food.
The animals will also find it hard to survive once they are released into the wild so I think that the best way for them tosurvive is to let them live in the wild.Ialso understand that there are many lovers around so I think that we should leave some natonal parks or nature parks left behind for them.

Aaron Chew:I think that keeping animals in zoos are cruel and not cruel. It is cruel because humans are snatching its freedom and parents away from the poor little animal and using it to attract people to the zoos. It is not cruel because zoo keepers are usually kind and caring towards animals in the zoos and they are well-fed in the zoos. About the surrounding, it depends on how the zoo keepers "decorate" the animal's enclosure. If the enclosure is not decorated in a way that it looks or feels like the natural surroundings, the poor animal is going to suffer in the zoo and will eventually die. Food is very important too. The food that is served to the animal will also let the animal feel that it is in its natural habitat and will not die because of the disability to adapt to its new surrounding. Animals are like human beings that have feelings, and if we are being treated in a "negative" way, we will suffer and even try to commit suicide!

Farhana:

I think i will agree with Putri. It is a yes and a no. Keeping animals in the zoo is very cruel and merciless. It is like capturing someone and then locking him up in a cell. I wonder how it feels like to be locked up but i really think it would be very torturing. But there again, the animals in the zoo is being fed. I think they are counted as lucky to be fed. In the wild, they are not being fed but it is suppose to hunt for its food and they get to live in its own habitat. But now, the singapore zoo as an example is very porpular and is well-known in the whole world. Compared to the other zoos, singapore zoo is the best and most likely to be the most favourite choice for the animals as the cages is a lot a like their own habitat. The cages are easily adapted by the animals.

Therefore, i think my answer would be a yes and a no.

The Arena...=/

Boon Han : I think .... better leave the animals in the wild.. then charge people to go into the place at their own risk!! haha later the lions eat them.=P Maybe in the future there will be some force field invented that can make people invisible or something..then we can leave animals in their natural habitat..and let people watch the animals in their natural environment..
without being eaten... best of both worlds huh? For now though..keep only a few in zoos.. as insurance. Later the animals in the wild catch some virus and become extinct.. at least some are in zoos still can survive..=/ Its not cruel if they are well cared for tho.. :-)

keeping animals in zoo...

Putri:

Yes.Keeping animals in zoo can be cruel.Although they are given food and being taken care of,they will not be able to roam about freely and they are not trained to find their own food and instead only depend on the zookeeper to feed them. They also will not know how is it to be in a wild jungle or forest and find their own food.

No.They are well fed and the zookeepers provide sufficient amount of food for them.I wonder if there were to be no zoos in the world,we will not know what species of animals living in this world. So,zoo let us know more about the animals in the zoo.

=)

keeping animals in zoos

Delfin: I think that keeping animals in zoos is not cruel as they are cared by zookeepers and will be provided with meals. Although some animals may be enclosed in cages, others have a surrounding that it is adaptable with. As long as the animals are well taken care of, i believe that keeping them in zoos is not cruel and they will have a better life in zoos.
=))

my opinions...

nurul: in my opinions...

Yes. Keeping animals in zoos meaning that we have taken their freedom away. yes even though the zoos provide wide space for them to run or walk around, their freedom is still limited. For example, the polar bears. They are kept in a glass case. They can only swim in the pool provided and stay on the land(ice). That is all they can do. Nothing much. Furthermore, they do not know what is it like in the outside world. Meaning their original habitat. Like defending themselves. This is due to the zookeepers who will always defend for the animals that is being bullied.

No. In zoos, animals are being taken care of and their meals are scheduled so they do not have to worry about hunting for food. Furthermore, they can entertain the visitors or tourists that visits the zoo by putting up shows. For example, the penguins and the dolphins.

Ryan(evolutioner): I think that keeping animals in zoos are cruel. They are enclosed in a cage and cannot roam about freely. This affects the fitness of the animal.Animals are also forced to leave their parents or children when they are taken away to the zoo.

To me....I think that keeping animals in zoos are very cruel as they lose their freedom and they are kept in cages that are not like their natural surroundings as the place is way too small...
Pony Panda Tiger Snake Zebra Rhino Giraffe
Anyway, although zoos help the country earn money, they are harming the animals at the same time.the animals may feel miserable too and they might miss their natural home and some would try to escape, causing trouble for the zoo keepers.

Turtle Crabby Dolphin Hippopotamus Alligator Sheep Moose

I believe that animals should be given freedom too.^^Animals are also living things and if anyone lock you up by force, how would you feel?
Anyway,my point is still that animals should not be kept in cages or enclosures.

Keeping animals in zoo=[

Wei Feng: I agree that it is cruel to keep animals in zoo.....
Keeping the animals in zoo means taking away the animals freedom....freedom of roaming the nature....freedom of exploring new things by themselves.....
but i also don't think that keeping animals is a extremely cruel thing........
People keep the animals in zoo for what?
It is partially for the money that is earned from the visitors...
Partially for protecting the animals.......
Partially for ensuring that the animals have their offspring.....
to ensure that the species of animals will not be extinct..

Keeping animals in zoos...

PeiWen: I think that it is not cruel to keep animals in zoo because they are well- fed and taken good care of in the zoo. They need not find food themselves and need not bear any hunger. There are also space for them to move about although it is smaller than its natural habitat. They are also protected from being killed by men. They will not become so easily extinct with the care and love the zoo-keepers give.

=))

keeping animals in zoos.

Kee Hang : yes i agree its cruel to keep animals in zoos. When animals are kept in zoos, they are in captivity and they do not have the freedom to roam on the world freely. They may not be able to adapt to the surroundings 2.

The discussion

James: Yes, keeping animals in Zoos is cruel as they may be used a a tourist attraction and if they do not obey or do not understand what they are told to do, they may be hit in front of the crowd.
Although there is,like Yi Yan said, space to move around, they do not hunt food on thier own, as they know that the zookeeper will throw them food at a certain time, this will cause the animals to depend on the zookeeper to provide the food for them. If the a certain part of a forest, plains e.t.c has a certain animal missing, they zoo sometimes set some animal free. These animals, which are already dependent on the zookeeper for food, is unable to hunt for its own food as it has loss the skill to do it. The animal will eventually die.

Answer

JiaQing:No, i do not think that it is cruel as the zoo-keepers treat them nicely and well fed.The only bad thing is that it sterilized. They live in a zoo but the enviroment is similiar to their own.Not in ,like, metal cages. They can "interact"with other animals too.

Yi Yan:
I do not think that it is cruel to keep animals in zoo as they are well kept and are not being ill treated.. Although they are for exhibition, they are fed well and have a suited man made habitat. They have enough space to roam about and will be treated as soon as possible if they are sick. Some zoos have animals that are going to extinct, it also helps to prevent extinction by killing. Zookeepers take care of the animals and do their part to protect them from being hurt from other people. So I think it is okay for animals to be kept in zoos unless it causes much harm to the animals.

:)

zimin: i think it is not cruel to keep animals in the zoo, unless they are being treated badly.
what i think is that the animals in the zoo should have been treated nicely by the zookeepers, so it should be no problem for the animals to be in the zoo.=))
